Volunteers in the Spotlight
Maria Oquendo Chan BSN, RN, CRRN, known as Dolly by her co-workers, friends and patients, is a Brain Injury and Spasticity nurse at TIRR Memorial Hermann Outpatient Medical Clinic. Dolly completed her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from West Visayas State University in the Philippines. She has over 30 years of clinical experience and is a long standing member of the Association of Rehab Nursing - Southeast Texas Chapter. Dolly has been nominated several times for the Daisy Award by patients and their families. She is proud to be a nurse and dedicated to caring for her patients. She frequently volunteers in the hospital, for church and in many community outreach programs. She is a tremendous support for our Stroke Institute Community Engagement program, participating annually in our Stomp Out Stroke programs. Dolly has one daughter, also a nurse, who joins her on some of her volunteer services. We are excited to recognize Dolly as a Stroke Volunteer Star! |
Sandi G. Shaw, BSN, RN, ASC-BC is the Stroke Program Director at Memorial Hermann TMC. Sandi completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She has over 20 years of clinical experience in acute stroke care and research. Stroke care is not only a profession for Sandi but is also personal She is the daughter of a two-time stroke survivor and acts as her mother's primary caregiver while maintaining a full-time leadership position and attending graduate school at Texas Woman’s University School of Business MBA program. Sandi is an advocate for patients and the community. For many years, she has participated in countless community outreach programs knowing the impact outreach education has on society. Sandi has co-authored a manuscript regarding her work in the community and looks forward to sharing the results with her colleagues. We are excited to recognize Sandi as a Stroke Volunteer Star! |
Lalita R. Thompson, MSN, RN, CRRN is a Nurse coordinator for the Intrathecal Baclofen Pump Program at TIRR Memorial Hermann. She has over 20 years of clinical experience and has received national recognition for her expertise in ITB therapy. Lalita completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Prairie View A&M University and Master of Science in Nursing from University of Phoenix. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Omicron Delta Chapter. Lalita is a patient advocate and dedicated to meeting the needs of the under-served through community education and outreach. She has spent countless hour over the years volunteering on the weekends providing stroke assessments to the community. We are proud to recognize Lalita as a Stroke Volunteer Star! |

How to volunteer?
To volunteer, complete the online volunteer form. CLICK VOLUNTEER below. Volunteers must be 18 years or older. We do allow minors, ages 15 to 17 to volunteer with parental consent. Parents must complete the online volunteer- minor form. CLICK VOLUNTEER - MINOR below.
